Mulgrave Road Theatre – Building a Cultural Landmark
Mulgrave Road Theatre is building an 8,300 sq. ft. Studio Theatre and Administration Building in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, with completion anticipated in spring 2026. This $8M project, funded by all levels of government and private partners, is designed to meet Net Zero Carbon Building standards under the Green and Inclusive Community Building fund. Delivering a high-performance facility in a rural setting presented challenges such as limited contractor experience with airtightness and thermal bridging, strict budget constraints, and complex stakeholder coordination. Tate Engineering addressed these challenges through a proactive approach pre-qualifying contractors, mandating training for high-performance techniques, and implementing mock-ups, blower door testing, and rigorous inspection protocols. The result will be a sustainable cultural landmark that enhances community programming, drives local economic development, and sets a new benchmark for green building practices in Nova Scotia.
